Are You Considering a Mommy Makeover After Pregnancy?

Admit it, almost everyone has this kind of obsession, if not envy, with celebrities --- especially celebrity moms who just gave birth and went back into their former shape as if they did not undergo pregnancy at all. Is someone shouting, “It’s unfair!”?

Media gives us the illusion that celebrity mothers return to their pre-pregnancy shape at an instant. Well, the truth is, any kind of bodily transformation takes time. It takes several months for the body to return to its pre-pregnancy form. During pregnancy, the body produces hormones and it brings changes that influences the development, growth, and birth of a child. The changes also include stretching of the skin and breast changes. After pregnancy, the skin makes an effort to return to its former state.

Despite regular diet and exercise, some women may find sagging skin in the lower abdomen and upper arms and breasts. These women are clamoring for a ‘Mommy Makeover,”a surgical procedure that aims to correct these post-partum changes. Surgeries can range from tummy tuck to liposuction, to breast lift, breast reduction or augmentation. It should be noted that these are not weight loss procedures but more of body contouring.

For moms who are considering a Mommy Makeover, they should maintain their ideal weight for the last six months. They should also have stopped breastfeeding for at least 6 months, because breasts have to return to their normal size and shape and stop producing milk.

A word of caution to set expectations straight: anyone can have a successful Mommy Makeover but it is possible that you may require more procedures, especially if you have more children and have experienced weight fluctuations before and after initial surgeries.

As an advice, mothers should do their homework. They have to seek a qualified cosmetic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Also, they should ask where the clinic is and make sure it is an accredited facility. It also pays to ask for photos and testimonials. Above all, mothers must like and trust the surgeon.
